A little sunshine, a little rain

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Romans 8:28

The financial planner at the bank assures me that ups and downs are a natural part of the economy. While there may be dips and rises in the market, what is important is the long-range view: are the investments increasing over time? Will the account be left to grow over time? Or will funds be withdrawn in panic before a gain can be realized? Up close we see all the dips and dives, and this may cause us to worry. But zoom out and see the upward trend, and we can breathe a sigh of relief.

A little sunshine, a little rain: this is also true of the seasons in our life. There may be times when we feel not only that 'nothing is going right' but that we are inundated with pain, mistakes, failures, struggle and inner and outer turmoil. Then there are seasons when we feel on top of the world and life is 'easy' - relationships are uncomplicated, work is meaningful and plentiful, resources are stable, health is steady and taken for granted. Only at the end of our life can we look back and - hopefully - see the upward trend of growth, of abundance, of experiences and memories.

This same trend is observable in practices and habits - life-giving ones as well as life-draining activities. There are ups and downs to these practices, times when they offer rich rewards that come with ease, and times when all seems dry, hard-fought for or fruitless. Whatever the current situation, we are reassured that, in the end, all will be well.

I'd love to hear how things are going in your world. And, if your faith journey seems a little off, why not try a few spiritual direction sessions to help you get back on track.
